“We are all Greeks” : Hellenes and Philhellenes in the War of Independence

POSTPONED

Join EMBCA and The Rotary Club of New York on Thursday , March 26, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at the Union League Club (38 East 37th St.) where Louis Katsos EMBCA’s President will make a presentation on “Hellenes and Philhellenes in the Hellenic War of Independence of 1821 and its Effects on the Abolitionist and Suffrage Movements in America and Beyond”. The joint event is in celebration of Greek Independence Day. The concept behind the presentation relates to the fact that the Hellenic Revolution of 1821 was not just about “Hellenes” / Greeks but rather an international historical event that effected America and many other nations around the world in ways not usually assumed and that the upcoming Greek Independence Day Parade is not just a “Greek” parade but an “American” parade also and related/relative to all of us. This event will precede the Greek Independence Day Parade (the largest in the world) down 5th Avenue in NYC on March 29, 2020. Louis is Co- Chairman of the parade this year. The statement “We are all Greeks” is taken from Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) famous verse drama “Hellas” written in 1821 at the start of the Hellenic Revolution and published (his last during his lifetime) in 1822 with the view of raising money for the war. The full quote from the poem is “We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our arts have their root in Greece.
