Join us for EMBCA’s “Journey and Reflections on Aristotle” Webinar Panel Discussion on Sunday, January 18, 2025 at 2 PM EST / 9 PM Athens EEST, introduced and moderated by Lou Katsos, EMBCA’s President. The distinguished panel, currently in formation, will include the Mayor of the Aristotle Municipality Stelios Valianos; Maria Pappa, Marketing Manager at Mount Athos Area Organization; Philosophy Professor Pavlos Kontos of the University of Patras the Co-Editor of “Aristotle Complete Works”; and Philosophy Professor Stasinos Stavrianeas of the University of Patras.
We will discuss the modern Municipality of Aristotle, in Greece nestled in the striking beauty of Chalkidiki, the place where Aristotle first opened his eyes to the natural world. Its landscape still carrying the imprint of his early curiosity from the ruins of ancient Stagira to the lush forests and coastline with pristine beaches that shaped his first observations of nature. Today, the region has embraced this heritage in a remarkable way. Sites like Aristotle’s Grove bring his scientific principles to life through hands on educational installations. Nearby ancient cities and historical routes deepen the connection between philosophy and place with the surrounding mountains, beaches, proximity to Mount Athos, and cultural festivals creating a setting where the classical and contemporary worlds merge seamlessly. It is a region that has transformed Aristotle’s memory into a living ancient and modern cultural experience that includes extensive hiking and cycling routes through coastlines and mountains.
At the same time our discussion will explore Aristotle himself, why MIT called him “the most influential personality in history”, and how his ideas continue to anchor Western logic, ethics, politics, and scientific method. Central to this exploration is the monumental new two volume Aristotle Complete Works, the first comprehensive English translation of the full corpus since 1954. This achievement opens Aristotle anew to scholars, students, and the global public with unprecedented clarity.
Together, the panel will connect the philosopher to the land that shaped him and to the modern world still shaped by him a journey from ancient Stagira to contemporary thought, from Chalkidiki’s heritage to the revitalized voice of Aristotle in this new translation.
A rich, engaging, and illuminating program not to be missed.
