On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Eastern Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance (EMBCA) presents a special panel discussion celebrating the life, work, and enduring legacy of Stephen Antonakos (1926–2013), one of the most innovative Hellenic American artists of the modern era.

Born in Agios Nikolaos, Laconia, Antonakos immigrated with his family to New York at the age of four and grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Beginning in the 1960s, he transformed neon, then associated primarily with commercial signage, into a powerful medium of abstract sculpture. Through luminous geometric forms, architectural installations, drawings, and his deeply contemplative Chapel works, Antonakos explored space, color, proportion, spirituality, and the relationship between the visible and the transcendent.

His work was exhibited internationally and entered the collections of many of the world’s leading museums. He participated in documenta 6 and represented the Hellenic Republic at the 1997 Venice Biennale, while his numerous public installations brought contemporary art directly into civic and architectural spaces around the world.

Our distinguished panel will examine Antonakos’s remarkable artistic journey, his formative years in Greece and New York, his pioneering contribution to the artistic use of neon, and the subtle influence of his Hellenic cultural inheritance. The discussion will also consider his place within postwar American and international art and the continuing relevance of his vision a century after his birth.
